Aircon BTU Size Calculator

Enter your room dimensions and we'll calculate the correct cooling capacity for Singapore's tropical climate.

How BTU Is Calculated for Singapore

Singapore's year-round heat and humidity means we use a tropical adjustment factor — 625 BTU per m² instead of the standard 500 BTU/m² used in temperate climates.

  • +10% for ceilings above 2.5m
  • +10% for full sun / west-facing rooms
  • −10% for shaded / north-facing rooms
  • +4,000 BTU for kitchens (heat load)
  • +600 BTU per additional occupant

BTU Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Singapore need more BTU per m² than other countries?

Singapore sits near the equator with year-round temperatures of 25–35°C and relative humidity above 70%. Standard BTU charts from the US assume temperate climates. We apply a 1.25× tropical multiplier to compensate for the constant heat load.

Should I go with the exact BTU or round up?

Rounding up by 10–15% is generally safe — a slightly oversized unit cycles off faster and still dehumidifies well in Singapore's humidity. Grossly oversized units (50%+ over) will short-cycle and leave rooms feeling damp.

Does BTU apply to inverter and non-inverter units the same way?

Yes. BTU is the cooling capacity of the unit, not its efficiency. Both inverter and non-inverter units are rated in BTU or HP. Inverter units achieve the same BTU with lower wattage — so choose the right BTU first, then pick inverter for lower running costs.

My room is an awkward shape — is the calculator still accurate?

Use the longest length and widest width to calculate the bounding rectangle. This slightly overestimates area for L-shaped or irregular rooms, which is conservative (slightly oversizing is fine). For very unusual layouts, WhatsApp us for a custom assessment.
